Deciding When to Leash Your Off-Leash Dog

If you have a dog who hikes off leash, you have probably figured out that it isn’t always smart or feasible to have your dog off leash, even on off-leash friendly trails. Whether it’s in your dog’s best interest or to be respectful of the trail and the other people on it, sometimes you have to leash your off-leash dog. In this video, I walk you through when, why, and how to leash your dog when you are on an off-leash hike.

Basically, if you can’t ensure that your dog is safe, that they definitely won’t approach people or dogs who don’t want that, that they won’t harass wildlife or damage the environment, and that you won’t cause a training regression, I recommend putting them back on leash.
